Training Groups

The Arizona Swimming Gauchos offer training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Arizona Swimming Gauchos to offer age / ability appropriate training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR ALL GROUPS: Racing suit (speedo, jammers, etc; for reducing drag in the water caused by baggy suits), Goggles and a swim cap. Please see the SPECIFIC GROUP MATERIALS THAT ARE NEEDED.(listed below)

Pre-Team

This is our entry level group. An athlete needs to be able to swim 25 yards to enter this group.

 

Age-Group I - SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR AGE GROUP I: Rubber Fins (plastic fins will tear up your feet) and a Pull Buoy.

From Pre-Team, athletes move into this group. Athletes in this group focus mainly on learning four legal competitive strokes, having fun, and perfecting start and turn technique.  Practice attendance is suggested 3-4 sessions per week to obtain maximum learning and skill potential.

Age Group II - SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR AGE GROUP II: Rubber Fins (plastic fins will tear up your feet), a Pull Buoy, front snorkel and a tempo trainer (see Coach Buster Thompson for more information on these products).

From Age-Group, athletes move into this group. Athletes in this group are usually at least 10 years old and can display focus and execution of required technical skills. This group is exposed to training for the first time while trying to prepare for the 200 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley races. Competing at swim meets is highly encouraged at a rate of about once per month and practice attendance of 4-6 sessions per week.

Senior I - SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR SENIOR I: Rubber Fins (plastic fins will tear up your feet) and a Pull Buoy.

Minimum age for entry into this group is 14 years old or high school students. Athletes entering this group are directed to take ownership of their own performance.  There is no practice attendance requirement for this group and meet participation is up to the athlete.  Focus of this group is to increase technical skills while maintaining the athletes physical fitness during the high school off-season.

Senior II - SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR SENIOR II: See Coach Charlie Cunningham for a list of needed materials for Senior II.

Athletes entering the Senior II training group must display a strong desire to perform at the highest level they are capable of. Training is geared towards individual talents, although a strong aerobic endurance factor is present. Athletes in the Senior II group are directed towards making their Western Sectional Time Standards and beyond. Minimum practice attendance for this group is 85%.

National Training Group - SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR NATIONAL TRAINING GROUP: See Coach Charlie Cunningham for a list of needed materials for National Training Group.

Minimum criteria for entry is (1) National Training Group time standard and a desire to be competitive on a National level. This group focuses on qualifying for Junior and Senior Nationals and Olympic Trials every 4 years.
